How are you celebrating Easter this year?
For a lot of people, it would be appropriate in 2020 to cross out the word celebration when thinking about Easter, which is traditionally a time when families come together, a time of faith and renewal. In my birth country of England, it is also Spring and a time of new beginnings.
For some, it has been a time when we go to church (but churches are closed in most cases) to commemorate the death and then the resurrection of Jesus from the dead. While for others, less religious, it is an opportunity for a short holiday, family feasts and barbecues. Maybe even a visit to the Royal Easter Show if you live in Sydney.
But COVID-19 has changed all of what was normal to be superseded by the #newnormal.
Many Australians are without jobs, businesses have closed. Others have had their dreams – or at least short-term dreams - dashed.
Those days of going to university to saviour the learning and social aspects of this world - is now a virtual world of learning. That trip abroad - a right of passage for young people including my youngest child - taking a gap year is on hold and for retirees taking that trip of a lifetime – well, that is temporarily shelved also.
But let’s take a step back. The old adage: “Someone is worse off than me” might be worthwhile recalling at this moment. While gathered around the dinner table or the barbecue as a big family group won’t be happening, there isn’t anything stopping us talking on the phone and the internet to communicate with each other.
Our Governments, both Federal and State, are announcing unparalleled stimulus packages to lessen the burden on individuals and businesses. I urge you to take heart. Look after yourself and others because your mental health is paramount in these situations.
Remind yourself, if you are concerned about the coronavirus outbreak, there are medical, scientific and public health experts around the world who are working tirelessly to contain the virus, treat those affected and develop a vaccine as quickly as possible.
The Taurus family from the bottom of our hearts, wish you and your families a safe and peaceful Easter.
Sincerely,
