Fixing our eyes on solid ground and what’s real
25/07/11: Fixing our eyes on solid ground and what’s real - A friend told me about a hairy experience he had during this visit to the Barrier Reef not long ago. On the way out to see the reef, the seas were enormous. He and his wife were sitting in the boat being tossed about by huge waves feeling seedy and awful. A crew member saw their distress so took them to the back of the boat. This gave them the opportunity for some fresh air but the crew member also gave them some good advice. "Look at the horizon." he said "Look back where we've come from and fix your eyes on the solid ground." He was suggesting that a cure for sea sickness was to focus on the fixed far horizon, on solid ground.
What helps with seasickness also helps in life. When you feel you are knocked about, pitched back and forth in life, you may also need to look back for solid ground. We need a stable horizon to focus our attention on and give us stability and hope in times of turmoil.
