Last Monday, I spoke at the webinar Build Your Profile with Social Media. The online seminar, hosted by the Australian Businesswomen’s Network (ABN), comes as part of a series aimed at empowering business owners to build brand and increase profit with social media. Speaking alongside Suzi Dafnis, I presented a series of slides on how to be the captain of your personal brand. After all, if you don’t, someone else will take your spot.
My first advice was to stop and consider what it is you stand for. We often find it difficult to talk ourselves ‘up’. Asking a friend or peer for a character review is one way to receive an objective understanding of our strengths. Knowing this will help set the tone and agenda of your social media and branding strategy.
Strategy is crucial to branding success. I looked at the need to develop short-term and long-term plans to build brand. It is also important to set KPIs around these plans. As I mentioned in the presentation, you can’t manage what you can’t measure.
Luckily, today there is a great range of monitoring tools that can measure social media traction. With one in every five minutes online spent on social media, business must be aware of their online presence. By using tools like TweetDeck, Topsy and TweetReach, business can get a high level overview into how their social media posts are tracking.
Finally, I ended the webinar by looking at the importance of being yourself – with purpose. Never underestimate the value of integrity.
